How to face these days without fear – Part 3

To face these days without fear we must not look to man, but to God alone

Pride today is probably one of the greatest diseases.  With the advent of social media and the desire to ‘be seen’ as something in other people’s eyes, has arisen a huge swathe in narcissistic attitudes.  Attitudes that promote self as all-sufficient and above others.  But the Word of God is clear regarding what will become of those who promote themselves.

Isaiah 2:11-12 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, The haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, And the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.  For the day of the Lord of hosts Shall come upon everything proud and lofty, Upon everything lifted up—And it shall be brought low—

Isaiah 2:17-19  The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, And the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; The Lord alone will be exalted in that day, But the idols He shall utterly abolish.  They shall go into the holes of the rocks, And into the caves of the earth, From the terror of the Lord
And the glory of His majesty, When He arises to shake the earth mightily.

Isaiah 2:22 Sever yourselves from such a man, Whose breath is in his nostrils; For of what account is he?

Henry says – ‘How wise therefore those are that cease from man;” it is our duty, it is our interest, to do so. “Put not your trust in man, nor make even the greatest and mightiest of men your confidence; cease to do so. Let not your eye be to the power of man, for it is finite and limited… it is not from him that your judgment proceeds.

Let not him be your fear, let not him be your hope; but look up to the power of God, to which all the powers of men are subject and subordinate; dread his wrath, secure his favour, take him for your help, and let your hope be in the Lord your God.”

Governments do not have all the answers, scientists do not have all the answers. God alone holds the keys to it all and He alone will not fail us.  But we have to put our whole-hearted trust in Him and this means letting go of self-promotion and self-sufficiency.

Whom can I trust?

Who can be trusted
When the battle is rife?
Is there anyone you can trust
With your life?

Who can you depend on
When the going gets tough?
Who is it who will make smooth
Every path that is rough?

Who is it who can go ahead
To prepare pathways new.
Who can take away all falsehood
To bring all that is true?

In the heat of the battle
Amidst the rising dust
Is there one in whom
You can put your trust?

In all the uncertainties of life
There is one thing you can do
You can place your trust
In the Man who died for you.

By the late Andrew Feakin (passed away 16th March 2019)

Prayer – Father in heaven, I place my trust in You.  You alone hold all things together and You alone hold me together.  You know the end from the beginning and the number of my days.  You alone sent Your Son to die for me, that I might live.  Forgive me where I have trusted in others and believed that I have no need of You.  Today I choose to trust that You alone can be counted on and You alone are all I need. Amen.
